Christian Bookstores and Sola Scriptura

I love this! Such a simple, fair, valid, obvious point.
Why indeed. If the Bible is self-interpreting then its contents should be clear to anyone willing to simply read it.
Other books could only color and distort the unadulterated meaning of the text.
If we are going down this path, then one must also wonder about the need for (and potential corrupting effect) of a pastor's sermon...
Excellent point! This shows nicely how absurd sola scriptura is. People may claim they believe it, but their practice proves otherwise.
my original bumper sticker worthy statement came after talking to a Christian neighbor who kept saying the usually variations of 20th century Protestant pseudo doctrine, and I kept showing him Catholic truths only using Bible verses.
I must have said "but that isn't in the Bible" about 20 times, yet sadly his eyes never opened
I'm sure they'd say "sola scriptura" just means the Bible is the final authority, and that they don't believe in "solo scriptura", so other books can be used as aids.
And yet...in practice there is no such thing as sola scriptura. The Bible, and Christianity in general, must be understood according to some theological system that can't be proven simply by using the text of the Bible.
As I have often said in other places on this blog, in reality and practice Luther, the founder of protestantism didn't actually believe in sola scriptura.(he appealed to apostolic tradition , the writings of the early Church Fathers to refute Zwingli and others who interpreted John 6 symbolically)
Sola Scriptura by necessity, had to be created by Luther in order to cast off the apostolic authority that had been with the Church since Jesus founded it , building it upon Saint Peter and his papal successors.
The concept of sola scriptura was a non-issue until the reformation. If you are going to rebel against Christ's Church, you need another anchor to appeal to. thousands and thousands of denominations later(all holding to sola scriptura but having diametrically opposed theology), we see the failure of this novel and illogical concept.
Well duh, the bookstores need books to tell people which translation of Scripture is more faithful to the oldest manuscripts preserved in monasteries too far away to visit personally.
The funny thing is, I've been to Protestant bookstores which have no resources on learning Biblical Greek!
