Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this scripture he told him the good news of Jesus.

And
as they went along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch
said, "See, here is water! What is to prevent my being baptized?"

And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.

And
when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught up
Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. |

This is great stuff! I am adding it to my growing file on Catholicism vs. Protestantism.
Yeah but if he had asked for help from the Holy Spirit he'd been infallible. Or something.
I do like the word perspicuity.
thanks magister! I can't wait to read that file someday ;)
kkoll, that's a good point. Using the theory of perspicuity, everyone indeed becomes their own infallible interpreter. The question is, if perpiscuity works, than why thousands upon thousands of denominations , many of which spit off from the other because of tow infallible interpretations of the same scripture that were diametrically opposed to one another. Yeah it is cool word. Rhymes with perpetuity.
This post is awesome. Thank you!
"The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living, teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ. This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.”
CCC 86 “Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication, and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith.”
CCC 890 “The mission of the Magisterium is linked to the definitive nature of the covenant established by God with his people in Christ. It is this Magisterium’s task to preserve God’s people from deviations and defections and to guarantee them the objective possibility of professing the true faith without error. Thus, the pastoral duty of the Magisterium is aimed at seeing to it that the People of God abides in the truth that liberates. To fulfill this service, Christ endowed the Church’s shepherds with the charism of infallibility in matters of faith and morals. The exercise of this charism has several forms.” Catechism of the Catholic Church
But the Eunuch probably wasn't mighty in the Scriptures.
Acts 18: 4 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, COMPETENT IN THE SCRIPTURES. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, THOUGH HE KNEW ONLY THE BAPTISM OF JOHN. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and EXPLAINED TO HIM THE WAY OF GOD MORE ACCURATELY.
So it is possible to be very competent in the Scriptures and know about Jesus BUT STILL not be fully informed. Perspicuity = debunked.
"...if perpiscuity works, than why thousands upon thousands of denominations..."
It works to keep congregations at the house-church level.
